2021 Call for Society for Consumer Psychology Officer Nominations
The Society for Consumer Psychology (SCP) Board of Directors is excited to seek nominations for two SCP Board positions starting in March 2021: - President. Nominations are invited for a leader who will serve a three-year term as President-Elect (2021-22), President (2022-23), and Past President (2023-24). The President is the principal executive officer of SCP. Subject to the direction and control of the Board of Directors, the President is in charge of the business and affairs of SCP, and presides at all meetings of the membership and of the Board of Directors.
- Secretary-Treasurer. Nominations are also invited for Secretary-Treasurer who will serve a two-year term starting March 1, 2020. Under the authority of the Board of Directors, the Secretary-Treasurer is responsible for overseeing officers, such as the Executive Officer, serves as the investment liaison working in concert with the Executive Officer, serves as the parliamentarian, and performs other duties as may be assigned by the President or by the Board of Directors.
Nominations should include:
- the name of the individual,
- their place of employment,
- the position they are being nominated for,
- a brief description of why you think the nominee would be a candidate for the position, and
- a recent CV of the nominee.
Self-nominations are welcome. Needless to say, the Board of Directors prefers that candidates nominated are current members of and have a history of engagement with SCP.
The SCP Board, that also serves as the Elections Committee, comprises Patti Williams (President), Meg Meloy (Past President), Geeta Menon (President-Elect), Aaron Brough (Secretary-Treasurer) and Eric Yorkston (Executive Officer).
Please email your nominations to the Elections Committee Chair, Geeta Menon, and cc to scp@tcu.edu by end-of-day Wednesday, October 21, 2020. Following the nominations process, elections will be opened to the SCP membership, and new office-holders will be announced at the annual SCP conference to be held March 4-6, 2021.
Call for Nominations: SCP Fellows
The Society for Consumer Psychology is seeking nominations of qualified individuals for SCP Fellow status. The criteria, as established by the SCP Board of Directors, are: Minimum standards for SCP Fellowship: - Current and prior SCP membership of at least one year;
- Active engagement at the time of nomination in the advancement of consumer psychology in any of its aspects;
- Five years of acceptable professional experience subsequent to the granting of the doctoral degree; and
- Evidence of unusual and outstanding contribution or performance in the field of consumer psychology.
Additional criteria: The most difficult judgment that must be made in connection with nominees for fellow status is to determine whether there has been "unusual and outstanding contribution or performance in the field of consumer psychology." - The existence of relevant publications is not enough. Publications must report impressive work, have an impact upon others, and have been refereed appropriately;
- Citation of the nominee's work by others is an important indicator of the impact of a contribution;
- Long-term SCP membership and activity (e.g., conference participation and leadership roles) are highly desirable;
- Accumulation of impact and performance over time must be demonstrated;
- Evidence of steady and continuing competence does not in itself meet the criterion of "outstanding and unusual."
Nomination procedure: The nominating member must be a member in good standing of the Society for Consumer Psychology. The nominator is responsible for preparing a letter of nomination, not to exceed three typewritten pages, that addresses the nominee's qualifications vis-à-vis the SCP Fellow criteria listed above. The letter must be accompanied by the nominee's current curriculum vitae. Both the letter and the CV must be submitted via email to the chair of the Fellows Committee. Nominations should be submitted in confidence, without informing the prospective Fellow. This avoids embarrassment should the nominee not be accepted. Unsuccessful nominations will automatically be re-considered for up to two additional years. Nominations are due June 14, 2020. The current Fellows Committee is Vicki Morwitz (chair), Barbara Kahn, and Debbie MacInnis. Nominations should be sent to vicki.morwitz@columbia.edu.

JCP Special Issue: Consumer Psychology for the Greater GoodCo-Editors: Kelly Goldsmith & Aparna A. Labroo Every day, consumers make a myriad of decisions that have the ability to affect the greater good, which we define as the collective well-being of the broader social group. Such decisions range from deciding whether or not to speak up in the face of unfair practices to accurately reporting one’s financial information on their taxes to understanding and empowering vulnerable consumers. Given their broad communal consequences, such decisions are of great interest to a variety of constituencies, including policy makers, non-profits, communities, and marketers, as well as individuals. Accordingly, theory-driven inquiry into the antecedents and consequences of consumer behaviors that serve the greater good offers great theoretical and practical value. Consumer psychology over the past decades has made substantive contributions to the understanding of consumer behavior; however, research truly motivated by impacting greater good has remained limited. To be clear, there is a difference between research motivated by the greater good versus research that is relevant to the greater good. In the former, the genesis of the research is a problem motivated by greater good; in the latter, greater good is referenced as possible loosely-related implication drawn from a broader inquiry. This Special Issue in JCP seeks research that fits the former category. The research could propose novel theories of how to promote greater good, question whether outcomes stereotypically thought of as generating greater good indeed serve the greater good, or even propose downstream problems that a quest for greater good might create. Applications of existing consumer decision making theories to promote the greater good are welcome, but only as long as a greater good problem is central to the paper and the application is consequential. Some potential (not binding) areas of investigation include: - Contributing to the Greater Good by Helping the Self:
- Promoting personal saving behavior, which reduces the cost of social support
- Promoting personal health and mental well-being, which reduces the cost of social isolation and loneliness
Promoting personal empowerment, which benefits the larger collective (e.g., standing up to unethical mistreatment from authority)
- Overcoming Personal Costs to Promote Contributions to the Greater Good:
- Increasing compliance with contributions to shared resources (e.g., paying taxes)
- Promoting pro-social actions, by individuals and/or by firms, including actions that promote charitable giving, CSR, fair trade, organ donation, and/or sustainability
- Promoting personal empowerment, which benefits the larger collective (e.g., standing up to unethical mistreatment from authority)
- Contributing to the Greater Good by Fostering Collaboration:
- Promoting personal saving behavior, which reduces the cost of social support
- Promoting personal health and mental well-being, which reduces the cost of social isolation and loneliness
- Promoting personal empowerment, which benefits the larger collective (e.g., standing up to unethical mistreatment from authority)
Submitted manuscripts could either be Research Reports or Research Articles in standard JCP format. All submissions are encouraged to provide complete methodological and other details in accompanying web appendices. If you have specific questions or would like the editors’ reaction to a proposed submission, please contact either of the editors ( Kelly Goldsmith or Aparna Labroo). Timeline:Deadline for initial manuscript submission: August 1, 2019 Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts early and anytime before the submission deadline as papers will be evaluated on a rolling basis.
Effective January 1, 2018, the Journal of Consumer Psychology will have a new publisher, Wiley. As part of this transition, the journal will be moving from the current submission and peer review management system, Elsevier Editorial System (EES), to ScholarOne Manuscripts (S1). This means that starting on October 2, 2017, manuscripts will be submitted using the new platform. Changes to the submission and peer review processes as a result of this transition should be minimal. If you need any ScholarOne assistance, please contact ScholarOne tech support at (888) 503-1050. The review process for manuscripts currently in the Elsevier (EES) system will remain with EES until December 15, 2017. A Tribute to Herbert E. Krugman
Herbert E. Krugman, the 6th President of APA Division 23 (1967), died at his home in Stamford, CT on July 30, 2016. He was 95.
Considered by many to be the leading theorist of his generation on the ways in which consumers respond to advertising, Herb combined physiological and cognitive psychology with survey methodology to create an interdisciplinary approach to understanding how consumers learn that was uniquely his own. He was a student of perception and the human brain; in three seminal articles, bookended by his AAPOR presidential address in 1965 and the Division 23 counterpart in 1967, he changed forever the way academics and the industry understood the nature of consumer response to television advertising. It was all about involvement: unlike consumers’ interactions with print media, their interactions with television occurred with much less cognitive involvement, so much so as to be an essentially different process. At AAPOR he said that consumers do not so much learn from television advertising as absorb it; at Division 23 he laid out a program for measuring the processes he had described.
Herb was 44 when he delivered his AAPOR address and 46 at Division 23. He continued to think and write about consumers’ responses to television for the next two decades, contributing significantly to the understanding of the physiological and cognitive processes underly-ing those responses. He was a key figure in creating the link between psychology and its applications in marketing and public relations, and for many years conducted studies that guided the marketing and public relations practices of some of America's largest corporations. He was both intellectually inquisitive and practical. He cared passionately about new ideas and often used his droll sense of humor to point out follies of conventional wisdom.

Call for Papers: JCP Special Issue on Marketplace Morality
Morality has received increasing attention from economists, psychologists, anthropologists, sociologists, and consumer researchers. Consumers’ morally questionable behaviors (such as wardrobing and overclaiming on insurance) have big impacts on companies and consumers respond strongly to organizations’ morally suspect behaviors. On the other side, consumers’ and organizations’ moral behaviors can lead to positive marketplace effects. However, many questions about how consumers define morality and evaluate their own moral behaviors as well as those of other consumers and of marketers remain. This JCP special issue seeks to move beyond an explanation of self-interest to advance our understanding of morality in the marketplace. Articles for this special issue should be submitted by November 30, 2016. Manuscripts should be submitted using the regular JCP online system, but specify that the submission is for this special issue. Further Information and Submission Guidelines

The SCP Fellows Committee, comprised of current SCP Fellows Valerie Folkes (Chair), John Lynch, and Joan Meyers-Levy commends Michel's research on affect and decision making for "help[ing] our field focus on feelings and how they influence consumers' thought processes, an important counterbalance to the domination of purely cognitive factors in the consumer decision making literature". The committee also recognizes Michel's contributions on regulatory focus theory. It refers to his work as path-breaking, innovative, and integrative. In addition to his scientific contributions, the committee lauds Michel's active engagement in the advancement of the field of Consumer Psychology. Among many other contributions, Michel has helped to shape our field as Research Dialogues Area Editor for SCP's flagship journal, the Journal of Consumer Psychology and as SCP President. His article based on his presidential address entitled "The Seven Sins of Consumer Psychology" (Journal of Consumer Psychology, 2013) critically evaluates the state of our field and provides clear guidance for the future. The Society for Consumer Psychology is pleased to recognize Michel's outstanding scholarship and leadership by naming him as an SCP Fellow, which is our Society's highest honor.

SCP is pleased to announce the implementation of a Small Grants Program that will provide funding for initiatives that further the goals and vision of SCP. The Grants Program is competitive, and will provide a maximum of $5000.00 for each funded initiative. Examples of possible initiatives are: - Support for pre-conference consortia for doctoral students,
- Funding for the organization of workshops, seminars, and other events that advance consumer psychology, particularly those that involve students and junior faculty.
Although the funds are limited, we seek proposals that will provide the greatest return on the dollar. Thus, well established and well funded programs would not be a high priority. Seminars and workshops focusing on new topics with an emphasis on funding participation by doctoral students and/or junior faculty would be much closer to our vision. All requests will be considered within an annual fiscal cycle (calendar year) and thus, should be submitted no later than Nov. 1 for consideration for the upcoming year. No more than one grant will be funded each year. All proposals should contain the following: - Cover letter that states the purpose of the initiative and summarizes the request
- Statement of objectives of the initiative, who is likely to benefit, how the initiative furthers the mission of SCP, and expected outcomes
- Any supportive documentation or rationale for why the initiative is needed
- A detailed budget for all projected expenses
- Method for distributing funds
- Contact person information responsible for the administration of the funds
Please note that only current SCP members are eligible for consideration. These awards will not pay administrative or overhead costs. Any funded initiative will be required to submit a post-report. Please send applications via e-mail to Larry Compeau, SCP Executive Officer, Clarkson University School of Business, 8 Clarkson Avenue-Box 5795, Potsdam, NY 13699 or via email to scp@clarkson.edu. All applications will be reviewed by the SCP Board of Directors and funded proposals will be announced when awarded.

SCP mourns the loss of co-founder and past president (1971) of Division 23, Dr. Joseph M Kamen, Professor Emeritus of Business Administration, Indiana University, where he as an
award-winning researcher, teacher, and colleague. He passed away on January 30th, 2014 at the age of 84.
His daughter, Paula, tells us that one of Dr. Kamen's proudest lifetime achievements was spearheading the formation of Division 23 in the 1960s, and signing up the required number
of members to make the new APA division. Many members of Division 23, including Dr. Kamen, came out of the Quartermaster Food & Container Institute, which was located in Chicago and established during WWII,
where they worked as psychologists trying to make the K-rations nutritious and palatable for the men in service. After the war, Dr. Kamen worked for many years with Amoco, building
the marketing research department there. As a consumer psychologist with a doctorate in industrial and applied experimental psychology from the University of Illinois, he helped
transform the field of contemporary marketing.
We are thankful for Dr. Joe Kamen's efforts to create SCP those many years ago.

Urgent Help Needed for Nalini Ambady
 Dear SCP Friends and Colleagues,
We have an unusual but very important request: Former SCP Keynote Speaker, Nalini Ambady, has leukemia and urgently needs a bone marrow transplant.
Because Nalini is of Indian descent and Indian donors are very unrepresented in existing donor pools, finding a match for her is very difficult. She
has only 8 weeks left to find a matching donor, who most likely has to be Indian as well. Nalini is a mother of two, a beloved professor and mentor,
and a wonderful person. You can find out more about her at www.nalinineedsyou.com,
and by watching
this video that explains her current situation.
You can help save her life by joining the bone marrow registry. This is very simple and takes almost no time. Search for a nearby drive that you can join
in person here or complete the online registration below.
- Complete the online registration
(if you're in the US) or via datriworld.org (if you're in India).
This takes less than 10 minutes.
- You will receive a kit in the mail. You swab your cheek with the provided cotton swab and mail it back in the pre-stamped envelope.
That's it!
Finally, please forward this email or share these links with your South Asian friends, relatives, and colleagues, even if you do not sign up yourself.
Visit www.nalinineedsyou.com for more information and ways to spread the
word, or if you have any questions, please shoot an email to helpnalininow@gmail.com.
Thank you,
The SCP Executive Board on behalf of “Team Ambady”
P.S. Does donating bone marrow sound painful or high-risk to you? It's not! Donating marrow is similar to donating blood. If you have questions about
the processes, you can find an answer here.
Best regards,
Michel Pham

that grew into large and active domains of research, bringing together researchers from different fields and traditions. An
excellent recent example is her work on sensory marketing, which brought together disparate work on the senses (conducted by

SCP International Conference 2012
Taskforce on Scientific Practices within SCP
A number of events in the past 12 months have combined to threaten the scientific credibility of our field (and the related field of social psychology).
As a professional organization whose mission is to advance the science of consumer psychology—a community of consumer scholars, we all take these threats
very seriously.
To address these issues, in March 2012 the Executive Board of SCP appointed a "Super-Committee on Scientific Practices in Consumer Psychology" (SCSP)
with the mission to develop a comprehensive set of guidelines to strengthen the science that is practiced and disseminated in our field. Chaired by
former SCP President L.J. Shrum, this "Super-Committee" has been assembled to reflect the diversity of perspectives that must be taken into account
in this broad endeavor. It includes senior associates of the Society's flagship journal, preeminent scholars in the field, representatives of the SCP
Ethics Committee, and representatives of our broad community of emerging consumer scholars.

SCP Officially Endorses the Social Psychology Network
The Society for Consumer Psychology, Division 23 of the American Psychological Association, is pleased
to endorse Social Psychology Network (SPN) as an outstanding resource for consumer psychologists to share
and disseminate psychological knowledge, expertise, and research findings. SPN is a scientific and
educational portal that offers many resources of interest to
consumer psychologists, such as professional
directories, blogs, news feeds, course syllabi, teaching materials, and online studies.
One of SPN's most valuable features is an interactive online directory of more than 1,900 professional
profiles. This directory permits psychological scientists to post their research interests, publications,
laboratory information, social media links, and course pages. Because the directory includes
professionals from many different areas of psychology, it represents an excellent means for consumer psychologists
to reach out to the broader community of psychological scientists and publicize their research
interests and findings.
We encourage anyone interested in consumer psychology to take advantage of SPN's unique resources and
support its mission by becoming a member of the Network.

including the Scientific Affairs Committee, and was a long-time member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Consumer
Psychology. She was named an SCP Fellow for her outstanding contribution to the field of consumer psychology.
Alice received her Ph.D. in Psychology from Stanford University in 1968. She was the SC Johnson Professor of Marketing and Professor of
